Nigerian students will now have the opportunity to acquire additional skills and trades to equip themselves for the future better and stay up-to-date with the rapidly evolving global market.
The curriculum for Federal Technical Colleges nationwide has been updated by the Nigerian government, which coincided with this development.
Under the revised technical-education curriculum, the Federal Ministry of Education declared that 26 trade categories had been authorized.
The government affirmed that the updated curriculum will formally transform all Federal Science and Technical Colleges into Federal Technical Colleges beginning with the 2025โ2026 academic year, in a statement signed by Ben Folasade, the Ministryโs Director of Press and Public Relations.
According to the statement:
โStudents will now take between nine and ten subjects. These will include one trade course, five or six general subjects such as Mathematics, English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Citizenship & Heritage Studies, two or three related subjects; and one elective.โ
The goal is to respond to the current needs of industries in Nigeria, particularly in digital services, construction, creative media, energy, agriculture, and other sectors.

How will these 26 trades work in schools?
Minister of Education Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa and Minister of State Professor Suwaiba Saโid Ahmad explained that each Federal Technical College will offer at least six and at most ten of the trade courses.
They also noted that the reforms have introduced Citizenship and Heritage Studies, alongside the core science and language subjects.
This follows other recent changes made to the secondary school curriculum in Nigeria.
