This Honjo International Scholarship is open to foreign students who study or plan to study in a Japanese graduate school for a doctoral or master’s degree. Applications can be submitted from abroad if applicants are accepted to a Japanese graduate school. All nationalities and research fields are welcome. Applicants may directly apply to the foundation without pre-selection by the university.

The Honjo International Scholarship Foundation offers fully funded scholarships for outstanding international students who wish to pursue graduate studies (Master’s or PhD) in Japan. Who can Apply?

International students (non-Japanese citizens) who:

  • Are enrolled or plan to enroll in a Japanese graduate school from April 2026.
  • Are under 30 years old (Master’s applicants) or under 35 years old (PhD applicants).
  • Can communicate in Japanese (interviews are conducted in Japanese).
  • Intend to return to their home country after graduation and contribute to development.
  • Enroll in a program longer than 12 months.

How are Applicants Selected?
Through document screening and interviews (held in Tokyo or online).

Which Countries Are Eligible?
All countries (except Japan).

Where will the Award be Taken?
Graduate schools in Japan.

How Many Awards?
Approximately 10 scholarships.

What is the Benefit of the Award?

  • Monthly stipend:
    • Â¥230,000 for 1–2 years
    • Â¥210,000 for 3 years
    • Â¥180,000 for 4–5 years
  • Travel grant for international conferences
  • Full tuition coverage and living expenses

How Long Will the Award Last?
Covers the entire minimum duration of the enrolled degree program (Master’s or PhD).
