The World Bank Group’s (WBG) Africa division is happy to announce that Ph.D. applicants and recent Ph.D. graduates who are citizens of Sub-Saharan Africa can now apply for the 2026 WBG Africa Fellowship Program. Women are urged to apply in particular. Through the fellowship, we hope to increase the next generation of African changemakers’ ability to conduct development research, formulate policies, and advance regional poverty reduction objectives.
You must be a Ph.D. candidate or a recent graduate from Sub-Saharan Africa (within three years of completing your Ph.D.) to be eligible. The complete eligibility requirements are listed below.

The World Bank Group (WBG) Africa Fellowship Program provides an opportunity for young African Ph.D. candidates and recent Ph.D. graduates to gain hands-on experience in research, policy, and development work at the World Bank. Fellows will work with WBG teams on projects that advance the institution’s mission of reducing poverty and promoting shared prosperity. Women are strongly encouraged to apply.

- Technical and Quantitative Fields
Type:
Fellowship (short-term consultancy).
Who can Apply?
- Nationals of Sub-Saharan Africa.
- Ph.D. candidates in the final year of study OR recent Ph.D. graduates (within the last 3 years).
- 32 years old or younger by January 2026.
- Strong command of English (written & spoken).
- Excellent quantitative and analytical skills.
How are Applicants Selected?
The process has two phases:
- Shortlisting – Based on specialization, skills, and research interests.
- Final Selection – WBG units review shortlisted candidates and make final picks. Selected fellows are then hired as short-term consultants for January–June 2026.

All countries in Sub-Saharan Africa.

- World Bank Group Headquarters, Washington D.C.
- OR at a World Bank country office in Africa.
How Many Awards?
A limited number of fellowships are offered each year (varies by cycle).

- Consultant fees for the 6-month assignment.
