The Icelandic Government Scholarships support international students pursuing the BA programme in Icelandic as a Second Language at the University of Iceland, Reykjavík. The program is administered by the Árni Magnússon Institute for Icelandic Studies and offers about 12 scholarships annually for the academic year September 1 – May 31.

Which Fields are Eligible?
🎓 BA in Icelandic as a Second Language (within the School of Humanities, University of Iceland).
Type:
Undergraduate scholarship (BA studies).
Who can Apply?
- Students who have completed at least one year of university studies in humanities.
- Applicants with basic knowledge of Icelandic (equivalent to Icelandic Online 1 & 2).
- Proficiency in English (used as a secondary instructional language).
- Preference given to candidates under 35 years of age.
How are Applicants Selected?
- Applications are reviewed by a special selection committee.
- Selection is based on academic merit, language preparedness, and supporting documents.
- Decisions are announced in January 2026.
- Successful applicants must then separately apply for admission to the University of Iceland by February 15, 2026.
- Online admission exams to assess Icelandic knowledge will be held in June 2026.
