AAUW’s International Postdoctoral Research Fellowships promote education and equity for women by investing in international applicants who will be pursuing postdoctoral research in the U.S., with the intention of applying their expertise, professional skills, and leadership in the context of their home countries.

Tell Me About the AAUW International Postdoctoral Research Fellowships:

The AAUW International Postdoctoral Research Fellowships support non-U.S. citizen women scholars pursuing full-time postdoctoral research in the United States. The program promotes academic excellence, equity, and global leadership among women, particularly those dedicated to empowering other women and girls in their home countries.

Established in 1917, this prestigious program has a long legacy of advancing women in STEM and related fields. Up to five additional awards are available through Graduate Women International (GWI) for eligible members conducting research in a country other than their own (excluding the U.S.).

Who can Apply?

  • Women who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents
  • Holders of a doctoral degree (Ph.D., Ed.D., M.D., J.D., etc.) with a minimum CGPA of 3.5/4.0
  • Admitted to their first postdoctoral research position
  • Committed to full-time research in the U.S.
  • Research must begin by September 1, 2026 and end on or after May 30, 2027
  • Applicants must reside in the U.S. for the fellowship period
  • GWI members pursuing research abroad must do so in a country other than their own

How are Applicants Selected?

Selection is based on:

  • Scholarly excellence and originality of research
  • Potential impact in home country
  • Leadership and service to women and girls
  • Research feasibility and timeline
  • Representation from underrepresented countries (preferred)
  • Preference for applicants currently residing in their home country and those seeking their first international experience

Which Countries Are Eligible?

Open to non-U.S. citizens and non-permanent residents from all countries.
(GWI members must not conduct research in their home country or the U.S.)

📍 Where will the Award be Taken?

At a U.S.-accredited institution (for most fellows).
For GWI members, at an international institution outside their home country.

How Many Awards?

What is the Benefit of the Award?

  • $50,000 stipend paid in two installments:
    • First: July–September 2026
    • Second: January 2027
  • Funds support research, living expenses, and professional development
