The UK today states that you must have enough money to pay for your course and support yourself in the UK. How much money you need depends on your circumstances and what you’re applying for. Now let’s look at the essentials.
What Are the UK Financial Requirements for Course Fees?
You need enough money to pay for your course for 1 academic year (up to 9 months). The amount you need to pay will be on your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS).
If you’ve been in the UK with a valid visa for at least 12 months, you do not need to prove you have this money for your visa application.
How Much Money Do You Need to Support Yourself in the UK (‘financial requirement’)
Unless you have been in the UK with a valid visa for at least 12 months on the date of your application, you will need to demonstrate that you have enough money to sustain yourself.
The location of your studies will determine how much money you require. You will require either:
- For up to nine months, the monthly cost of London courses is £1,483.
- For up to nine months, the monthly cost of courses outside of London is £1,136.
You’ll be required to pay boarding fees if you’re attending a residential independent school. Your CAS will show how much you must pay.
Each family member you bring with you will require proof that you have extra cash.
This money must be in your possession for a minimum of 28 days in a row. The 28-day term must expire within 31 days of the day you submit your visa application.
For instance
You would need to provide proof that the money was in your bank account for at least the 28 days ending December 1, 2021, if you submitted your application on January 1, 2021.
You will need to present proof from your loan or sponsorship provider if you have a student loan or financial sponsorship.

When you don’t need to show proof of funds that you can sustain yourself
The following situations exclude you from proving the financial requirement:
- You must be in the UK right now and have had a UK visa for 12 months before the date of your student visa application.
- You’re applying to be a sabbatical officer for the student union.
