Dalhousie University Killam International Research Scholarship 2026 in Canada

Dalhousie University, with support from the Killam Alumni Fund, has created the Killam International Research Award to offer global research opportunities for Killam Scholars. Awards of up to $6,000 each are available to current Killam Doctoral Scholarship holders to cover expenses related to research conducted outside Canada for a duration of up to three months.

The Killam International Research Scholarship 2026 at Dalhousie University offers exceptional Killam Doctoral Scholars the opportunity to expand their research internationally.

Get Up to $100,000 Student Loan for Your Master in US or Canada.

Funded by the Killam Alumni Fund, this award supports short-term research stays abroad, helping scholars build global academic connections, enhance their doctoral work, and return with valuable international experience.

Which Fields are Eligible?

• Doctoral research across disciplines at Dalhousie University.
• Proposed research abroad must directly support the candidate’s PhD studies.

Who can Apply?

Applicants must:

• Be current Killam Doctoral Scholarship holders at Dalhousie University.
• Have accepted or currently hold a Level 2 Killam Predoctoral Award.
• Not have previously received a Killam International Research Award or other international travel supplement (e.g., Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplement).
• Conduct research requiring physical presence abroad.
• Remain registered full-time in a PhD program throughout the research period.
• Hold an active Killam award when the international research begins.
• Use the award within one year of receiving notice.
• Return to Dalhousie University to complete their degree after the research stay.

How are Applicants Selected?

Applications are reviewed based on:

• Significance, feasibility, and merit of proposed activities.
• Justification for choice of host institution(s) and/or supervisor(s).
• Relevance and anticipated benefits of proposed activities to current doctoral training.
• Alignment with the mission of the Killam Trusts to advance Canada’s future through scholarly excellence.

Which Countries Are Eligible?

• Research stays can be undertaken at institutions outside Canada.

Where will the Scholarship be Taken?

• Abroad at a host institution or research location outside Canada.

How Many Scholarships?

Two awards available.

What is the Benefit of the Scholarship?

• Up to $6,000 to cover:
  • International travel costs
  • Accommodation and meals abroad
  • Living expenses during research period
  • Research-related fees and supplies
  • Study or travel visas
  • Insurance and other necessary expenditures
• Supports research stays of up to 3 months.

How Long Will the Scholarship Last?

• Research period abroad: up to 3 months.

Required Documents:

1. Budget proposal (up to $6,000 request).
2. Outline of proposed research abroad (max 2 pages, plain language).
   • Objectives, significance, methodology, expected outcomes.
   • Relation to doctoral research at Dalhousie.
   • Timelines and milestones.
3. Two letters of support:
   • From current Dalhousie research supervisor.
   • From potential host supervisor abroad (confirming resources and support).
