The University of Glasgow Sanctuary Scholarship has been created to support applicants with Refugee or Asylum Seeker status who are currently living in the UK and hold an offer to study with us in the 2026/27 academic year. The scholarship is open to prospective undergraduate and postgraduate taught students at the University of Glasgow applying for entry in September 2026/27.

As a University of Sanctuary, Glasgow is committed to ensuring that talented individuals seeking refuge can access higher education. The scholarship provides a full tuition fee waiver and a £5,000 annual stipend to assist with study costs, enabling recipients to focus on their academic journey and rebuild their futures.

Which Fields are Eligible?

  • Undergraduate programmes (full-time only).
  • Postgraduate taught Master’s programmes (full-time only).
    Not eligible: PGDip, PGDE, or part-time programmes.

Who can Apply?

Applicants must:

  • Hold a firm conditional or unconditional offer for full-time study at the University of Glasgow for 2026/27.
  • Be currently located in the UK with Home or RUK fee status.
  • Have submitted a claim for asylum in the UK OR be appealing a negative decision OR have been granted Refugee Status, Humanitarian Protection (HP), or Discretionary Leave (DL).
  • OR have come to the UK through resettlement schemes such as:
    • UK Resettlement Scheme (UKRS)
    • Afghan Citizens Resettlement Scheme
    • Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy (ARAP)
    • Syrian Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Scheme (VPRS)
    • Ukraine Sponsorship Scheme (Homes for Ukraine)
    • Ukraine Family Scheme

How are Applicants Selected?

  • Applications reviewed based on eligibility and documentation.
  • Selection panel considers applicants’ circumstances and commitment to study.
  • Donor-funded awards (stipend only) also considered under the same application process.

Applicants must already be living in the UK under refugee or asylum-related status.

How Many Awards?

  • 19 Sanctuary Scholarships (full tuition + stipend).
  • Additional donor-funded scholarships (stipend only).

What is the Benefit of the Award?

  • Full tuition fee waiver for the duration of study (if not eligible for mainstream student finance).
  • £5,000 per year stipend for study costs.
  • Partial tuition fee waiver for postgraduate taught students with refugee status who already have partial funding.
  • Donor-funded scholarships available (stipend only).
  • Note: University accommodation is not included, except for a small number of donor-funded awards for those with no access to public funds.

How Long Will the Award Last?

For the full duration of the undergraduate or postgraduate taught programme.
