Tell Me About The Award:
The Study of the U.S. Institutes (SUSIs) for Secondary Educators is a prestigious, intensive academic program funded by the U.S. Department of State and administered by the University of Montana. It provides secondary school teachers and administrators from outside the U.S. with a deeper understanding of American society, institutions, history, and culture. The program strengthens curricula and equips educators with resources to teach about the United States upon returning home.

Which Fields are Eligible?
Secondary education professionals in:
- Teaching (high school teachers, ages 14–18)
- Administration (teacher trainers, curriculum developers, textbook authors, Ministry of Education officials, etc.)
Type:
Postgraduate-level academic institute (non-degree, professional development).
Who can Apply?
- Mid-career, highly motivated secondary educators (teachers or administrators).
- Must demonstrate fluency in English.
- Must reside and work outside the United States.
- Priority given to those with limited/no prior U.S. experience and clear plans to integrate American studies into curricula.
- U.S. citizens and permanent residents are not eligible.
How are Applicants Selected?
Selection is merit-based and highly competitive. Candidates are assessed on:
- Academic and professional credentials.
- Plans to improve or develop American studies curricula.
- Demonstrated interest in program themes.
- Potential impact and multiplier effect of participation.
- English fluency (may be confirmed via interview with a U.S. diplomat).
Which Countries Are Eligible?
Educators from outside the United States (including Romania and other partner countries).
Where will the Award be Taken?
At U.S. academic institutions (residency + field experience across different regions of the United States).
How Many Awards?
60 participants worldwide (teachers and administrators).
What is the Benefit of the Award?
- Full funding (program administration, travel, accommodation, meals, cultural activities, books, and miscellaneous expenses).
- International travel and visa costs covered.
- Accident and Sickness Program for Exchanges (ASPE) health benefit (up to $100,000 coverage).
- Academic residency (4 weeks) + field experience (1 week).
- Access to lectures, seminars, workshops, site visits, and cultural activities.
- Resources to enhance teaching of American history, society, and institutions.
How Long Will the Award Last?
Five weeks (late May – early June 2026).
