The Imperial College London (ICL) Global Development Fellowship supports high-impact, short-term research placements for PhD students from Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Lower Middle Income Countries (LMICs).

Selected fellows will spend 2–4 months at Imperial College London working under the supervision of an Imperial faculty member, alongside support from their home PhD supervisor. The goal is to boost global research collaboration, capacity-building, and professional development for scholars from developing countries.

Placements:

  • Must start March 2026
  • Must be completed by 31 July 2026

The fellowship is fully funded and covers stipend, travel, visa, and related costs.

Which Fields are Eligible?

All academic and research fields offered at Imperial College London, provided the placement aligns with the applicant’s PhD research area.

  • Fully Funded Research Fellowship
  • Short-Term Research Placement (2–4 months)
  • PhD Mobility Fellowship

Who can Apply?

Applicants must:

  • Be current PhD students
  • Hold citizenship AND permanent residency in an LDC or LMIC (as defined by the OECD ODA list)
  • Be enrolled at a university located in an LDC or LMIC
  • Have completed at least 12 months of their PhD by the placement start date
  • Have:
    • A Letter of Recommendation from their PhD supervisor
    • A Letter of Support from a host supervisor at Imperial (signed by Head of Department)
  • Have a sufficient level of English proficiency (confirmed in the recommendation letter)

How are Applicants Selected?

Selection is based on:

  • Eligibility compliance
  • Strength of the letters of support and recommendation
  • Quality, clarity, and relevance of the proposed research placement
  • Fit between the student’s PhD research and the potential host department at Imperial
  • Potential impact of the placement on the applicant’s research, skills, and home institution

Which Countries Are Eligible?

Only students from:

  • Least Developed Countries (LDCs)
  • Lower Middle Income Countries (LMICs)
    (as classified by the OECD ODA Recipients List)

Upper Middle Income Countries are NOT eligible.

Where will the Fellowship be Taken?

  • Imperial College London, United Kingdom
  • Fellows are expected to arrange their own accommodation in London (guidance provided)

How Many Fellowships?

Imperial does not specify a fixed number; multiple placements are funded each year based on available budget and quality of applicants.
