The A.S. Hornby Educational Trust Scholarship supports capacity building in English language teaching across low- and middle-income countries.
The Trust provides fully funded Master’s scholarships for experienced English language teachers and professionals who demonstrate clear potential to contribute to the development of English language teaching (ELT) in their home countries.

For 2026, up to 10 fully funded scholarships are available for the MEd TESOL Programme at the University of Exeter (September 2026 entry).
Applications are jointly assessed by the University of Exeter and the Hornby Trust.

This scholarship is only for the MEd TESOL and not available for PGCert or PGDip routes.

Which Fields are Eligible?

  • TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages)
    — Specifically the MEd TESOL program at the University of Exeter.

Type:

  • Fully Funded Master’s Scholarship
  • On-campus study in the UK
  • 1-year postgraduate programme

Who can Apply?

Applicants must meet all the following criteria:

  • Be a resident of and working in a country classified as Least Developed, Low Income, Lower Middle Income, or Upper Middle Income (OECD DAC list).
  • Have at least 3 years of full-time TESOL teaching or related professional experience after their first degree.
  • Hold an undergraduate degree with grades equivalent to a UK Upper Second Class (2:1) or higher.
  • Must not hold a PhD in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, English, or related areas.
  • Must not hold a Master’s degree in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, English, or related fields from a UK university.

How are Applicants Selected?

Selection is based on:

  • Academic merit
  • Professional experience in TESOL
  • Demonstrated potential to positively impact ELT in their home country
  • Interview performance (for shortlisted candidates)
  • Joint review by the University of Exeter and the Hornby Trust

Shortlist and interview timelines:

  • Shortlist notification: By 6 March 2026
  • Interviews: 16–25 March 2026
  • Final decisions: By 2 April 2026

  • Upper Middle Income Countries

What is the Benefit of the Award?

Each scholarship provides:

  • Full University tuition fees
  • A monthly stipend (minimum £15,500 total) for accommodation and living expenses
  • Return international travel costs
  • UK Visa fees
  • National Health Service (NHS) surcharge fees
  • Additional approved grants for academic-related costs

How Long Will the Award Last?

  • 1 year (full-time MEd TESOL program)

How to Apply:

The application process has two required steps:

Step 1:

Complete the Hornby Scholarship Application Form (primary application).
You do not need to apply for the MEd TESOL first.

Step 2:

Shortlisted applicants will receive instructions on applying for the MEd TESOL at the University of Exeter.

Final award

The scholarship is confirmed only if the candidate is accepted onto the MEd TESOL programme after applying.
