The St Andrews GREAT Scholarship is an exciting scholarship opportunity is open to students who aspire to become influential leaders in their future careers, have wide-ranging interests outside their studies, and desire to broaden their personal and academic experience at the University of St Andrews.
Awards of £10,000 are available for full-time postgraduate taught Masters programmes (MSc, MRes, MLitt, MPP) across all subject areas.

The University of St Andrews – GREAT Scholarship 2026, in partnership with the British Council, offers an exciting opportunity for outstanding international students who aspire to become global leaders. The scholarship supports talented individuals with strong academic records, leadership potential, and a desire to make a meaningful impact through postgraduate study at one of the UK’s most prestigious universities.
The GREAT Scholarship aims to promote international collaboration and cultural exchange, empowering students to broaden their academic and personal horizons while studying in the UK.
Which Fields are Eligible?
All taught postgraduate Master’s programs (MSc, MRes, MLitt, MPP) across the following Schools:
- Art History, Biology, Chemistry, Classics
- Computer Science, Divinity, Earth & Environmental Sciences
- English, Film Studies, Graduate School, History
- International Relations, Mathematics & Statistics
- Modern Languages, Philosophy, Physics & Astronomy
- Psychology & Neuroscience, Social Anthropology
- University of St Andrews Business School
- International Education and Lifelong Learning Institute
(Graduate Diplomas, online/distance learning, and overseas campus programs are not eligible.)

Who can Apply?
Applicants must:
- Be citizens of France, Greece, Indonesia, Italy, Malaysia, Mexico, or Spain.
- Have applied for an eligible full-time taught Master’s program (MSc, MRes, MLitt, or MPP).
- Be classified as overseas students for tuition purposes.
- Meet the English language requirements of their course (or begin a pre-sessional English program by 30 June 2026).
- Demonstrate academic excellence, leadership potential, and community engagement.

- Leadership potential and extracurricular involvement
- Motivation and clarity of goals in the personal statement
- Commitment to contributing to the University and British Council Ambassador Schemes

How Long Will the Award Last?
One academic year (full-time postgraduate Master’s study).

- Apply for an eligible Master’s program at the University of St Andrews.
- Wait up to two working days to receive login credentials for the My Application portal.
- Log in to the portal → Go to Scholarships and Funding → Search for British Council GREAT Scholarship.
- Complete the scholarship application form, including:
- Reasons for applying
- Expected benefits and contributions to the university community
- Upload:
- One academic reference
- University transcript(s) (interim or final)
- Submit your application before 24 May 2026.
