The Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS) Program 2026 is now open for applications! 🎓
Organized by Yale University, YYAS is a free academic and leadership development program for outstanding African secondary school students (ages 14–18) who aspire to pursue higher education and make a lasting impact across the continent.

The Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS) Program is a free academic and leadership development initiative by Yale University designed to equip outstanding African secondary school students with the skills, knowledge, and networks to pursue higher education and drive positive change in their communities.

The program includes academic enrichment, leadership training, mentorship by Yale-affiliated educators, and university preparation. Participants also join a lifelong network of young African changemakers.

Which Fields are Eligible?
All academic interests are welcome. YYAS focuses on leadership, innovation, university readiness, and global citizenship rather than specific academic fields.

Secondary School Academic Enrichment & Leadership Program

Who can Apply?

Applicants must:

  • Be 14–18 years old on July 16, 2026.
  • Be a citizen or permanent resident of an African country (refugees are also eligible).
  • Be currently enrolled in secondary school in Africa.
  • Be in 10th or 11th grade (or equivalent).
  • Graduate between:
    • May/June 2027–May/June 2028 (Northern Hemisphere) or
    • Nov/Dec 2026–Nov/Dec 2027 (Southern Hemisphere).
  • Be proficient in English.

How are Applicants Selected?
Selection is based on academic excellence, leadership potential, community impact, and commitment to higher education. Preference is given to high-achieving, low-income (HALI) students who have limited access to university guidance in their schools or communities.

Which Countries Are Eligible?
🌍 All African countries are eligible.

Where will the Award be Taken?

  • Online College Prep Workshop: Virtual (open to students across Africa)
  • Residential Leadership Summit: In-person at a school campus in Kenya

How Many Awards?

Approximately 350 students will be selected:

  • Around 240 for the Online College Prep Workshop
  • Around 110 for the Residential Leadership Summit in Kenya

What is the Benefit of the Award?

🎓 Fully Funded Program Benefits:

  • No tuition fees for any track
  • Accommodation, meals, and academic materials (for the residential summit)
  • Need-based travel grants for students outside Kenya
  • Leadership and university preparation training
  • Mentorship from Yale faculty and alumni
  • Certificate of Completion from Yale University

How Long Will the Award Last?

  • Online College Prep Workshop: 6 days (16 – 21 July 2026)
  • Residential Leadership Summit (Kenya): 9 days (8 – 16 August 2026)

How to Apply:

Complete the online application form and submit:

  • A 500-word essay and two short responses
  • Official transcripts or grade reports for grades 9–11
  • One teacher recommendation (submitted online by the teacher)
